GEO and SEO: differences and similarities

SEO and GEO both create visibility, with different means. SEO gets companies and publishers into the Google results list, GEO turns their content into a cited source in AI answers.

What is SEO, and what is GEO?

SEO gets a page into the classic results list, GEO ensures that AI systems name and cite the content as a source.

What does SEO mean?

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. The goal is a good position in Google's organic results and a click on your own page.

The work covers three fields: technology (crawling, indexing, speed), content (matching the search intent) and authority (links, reputation, expertise).

What does GEO mean?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. The goal is the mention and citation of a brand in the answers of generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews.

The term was coined by the study "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Aggarwal et al. (Princeton University and others). It showed that an authoritative style, statistics and source references increase visibility in AI answers.

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO optimises for rankings and clicks, GEO for mentions and citations in the answers of AI systems.

Beyond that, the two differ in channel, success signal and data basis. The following table compares the seven most important dimensions.

Dimension SEO GEO
Goal Ranking and click to your own page. Mention and citation in the AI answer.
Channel Google and Bing, the classic results list. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews.
Success signal Position, organic traffic, click-through rate. Mentions, citations, share of voice.
Query Short, fragmented keywords. Long, conversational prompts.
Demand data Search volume measurable per keyword (tools, Search Console). No volume per prompt: inputs do not become public.
Measurement Search Console, GA4, Sistrix, Ahrefs. Young tools such as Peec AI, Otterly, Rankscale.
Stability Relatively stable and testable over weeks. Fluctuates per query, since every answer is generated anew.

Which success signal counts where?

In SEO, the click counts: a person sees the result, clicks and lands on the page. Success is measurable in Google Search Console.

In GEO, the mention counts: the AI system summarises an answer and lists the brand as a source. Success shows in mentions, citations and share of voice.

Why is there no search volume for prompts?

Unlike keywords, Prompts have no measurable search volume, because ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini do not make their inputs public. AI search remains a black box.

In SEO, keyword tools and Search Console deliver reliable demand figures. In GEO you work instead with prompt groups from real user questions and estimate relevance instead of counting volume.

What do SEO and GEO have in common?

SEO and GEO rest on the same foundation: real expertise (E-E-A-T), clean entities, helpful content and a technically crawlable, fast website.

Why is E-E-A-T the shared foundation?

E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. Google uses it to evaluate content, and AI systems prefer the same signals when they look for a trustworthy source for their answer.

Anyone who loses visibility in classic search therefore often loses in parallel in AI answers. Both systems draw on the same quality assessment.

What role do entities play?

Entities are unambiguously named things, people, brands and terms including their relationships. Google calls the principle "things not strings", and it supports both rankings and AI answers.

A brand that is recognisable as an unambiguous entity appears more reliably in search results and in generative answers. Unclear terms without context give away visibility in both channels.

Why does the technical basis count for both?

A crawlable and fast website is the prerequisite for visibility. An AI system can only cite what it can reach, read and classify beforehand.

Structured data, a clean site architecture and short load times therefore pay into SEO and GEO at the same time. Technical errors slow down both channels.

Does GEO replace classic SEO?

No, GEO does not replace SEO, it builds on it: without crawlable, well-ranking pages, AI systems hardly cite a brand.

Google's AI Overviews build directly on the Google index, and other AI systems also prefer pages that are strong in classic search. A brand without an SEO basis therefore remains invisible in the answers too.

Is classic SEO still relevant?

Yes, because most people continue to search via Google. SEO provides the foundation on which generative answers find a source in the first place.

At the same time, AI search is growing fast: ChatGPT counts more than 900 million weekly users according to OpenAI, Google's AI Overviews reach around 2.5 billion people per month according to Google.

Is GEO part of SEO or a discipline of its own?

GEO is not a separate discipline but the evolution of SEO for AI answers: it uses the same basis and adds prompt work and citation tracking.

The industry argues about whether GEO, AEO and LLMO are fields of their own or just new names for one principle. It agrees that GEO complements SEO and does not replace it.

The sensible question is therefore not "GEO or SEO", but how to serve both channels together. Anyone who relies on only one gives away reach.

Why do GEO and SEO matter for companies and publishers?

Both disciplines decide whether a brand appears where people research today: in Google Search and in AI answers.

What relevance do GEO and SEO have for companies and brands?

Companies want to appear as a trustworthy source in AI answers, especially in comparisons, buying advice and provider selection. A mention at the right moment influences the decision directly.

Anyone missing from the shortlists of the AI systems is often no longer noticed at all in the research phase. SEO in parallel ensures that the website also captures.

The ongoing build-up of such mentions in AI answers is the responsibility of a GEO agency.

What relevance do GEO and SEO have for publishers and newsrooms?

Publishers and newsrooms gain reach in classic search via SEO, traffic in Google Discover and visibility in Google News. GEO additionally decides whether AI systems cite their articles as a source.

For publishers, GEO opens a specific opportunity to bring product-related landing pages such as subscription and newsletter pages into AI answers. The channel thus turns from a pure reach lever into a revenue lever.

Since AI answers intercept clicks, the mention as a brand counts more and more for publishers. Anyone who appears early as a source in AI answers secures future visibility.

How do you optimise for SEO and GEO at the same time?

Anyone who wants to serve both channels first builds the shared SEO basis and then consistently aligns content with mentions and citations.

AI also serves as a tool for SEO work, from research to drafting. How that works is covered in the guide AI SEO.

What makes content citable?

Citation worthiness describes how easily an AI system adopts a passage as a source. It decides whether a brand is cited or remains invisible.

A section becomes citable through answer-first, an unambiguously named entity and a specific piece of evidence: a figure, date, study or own experience. No system cites interchangeable platitudes.

Short paragraphs, precise terms and structured data additionally increase citation worthiness. A paragraph that answers a question completely ranks better and is cited more often.

How do you research prompts without volume data?

Prompts are researched from first-party sources instead of volume tools: real questions from sales, support, reader mail, site search and Search Console form the most reliable basis.

With Search Console, caution is advised: long, conversational queries do appear there, but their origin remains unclear. They may come from real users or from GEO monitoring tools that fire prompts automatically.

Without reliable prompt volume, you prioritise by need for evidence instead of by numbers. Current, local or comparative questions need external sources and offer the best citation chances.

How do you measure success in both channels?

For SEO, Search Console and GA4 deliver rankings, clicks and traffic. This data remains the reliable basis of every evaluation.

For GEO, you count mentions, citations and AI referrer traffic, supplemented by brand searches after an AI contact. Only both data sources together show the real effect.

Frequently asked questions about GEO and SEO +

Is GEO more important than SEO?

GEO is not more important than SEO, it depends on SEO. AI systems only cite content that they can crawl, classify and assess as trustworthy.

What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?

SEO optimises rankings in classic search. GEO aims at mentions and citations in generative AI answers, AEO at direct answers in answer boxes and featured snippets.

How reputable is GEO?

GEO is a discipline to be taken seriously, with a scientific origin: the term comes from an academic research paper. Only guarantees of fixed placements in AI answers are disreputable.

Will SEO still exist in five years?

SEO remains relevant but is changing. AI answers rely on the same index and the same quality signals, so work on content and technology remains the foundation.

What does GEO mean in marketing?

GEO in marketing stands for Generative Engine Optimization, meaning the optimisation of content for AI search systems. It does not mean geographic or local search engine optimisation.
