What does the Google Discover check test?

The Google Discover check tests four technical requirements that are decisive for Google Discover, directly on the raw HTML of your article URL.

  • Image preview setting: max-image-preview:large set (also checked via X-Robots-Tag header) and no noindex that excludes the URL from Discover.
  • Featured image: og:image present, retrievable, raster format and actually measured at 1,200 pixels wide or more, not the CMS value but the real file.
  • Visible E-E-A-T: Byline, linked author profile and legal notice must be findable for readers and Google.
  • Dedicated Discover headline: og:title maintained, separate from the title tag and within the 120 visible characters.

How does the Google Discover check work?

You enter the article URL and your email address; the report arrives within a few minutes in your inbox: traffic-light result, all findings, prioritised measures.

  • Live check: The tool reads robots directives, meta data and E-E-A-T signals directly from the raw HTML and measures the og:image at its original size.
  • Report by email: The full result including a sample of up to three further articles from the same website, so you can see whether a finding concerns the template.
  • Going deeper: In the initial call Moritz Serif goes beyond the single URL, a sample of several articles from the template, plus an assessment of image subjects and headlines.

Is Discover readiness a guarantee of traffic?

No. Readiness is not a guarantee, the check tests the technical requirements, it does not predict Discover traffic.

Google Discover remains a volatile bonus channel whose delivery Google alone controls. Image subject quality and content policy cannot be checked by machine either; that remains an editorial judgement.

Who is the Google Discover check for?

The Google Discover check is aimed at publishers, news sites and editorial publishers that publish their own articles. Anyone who wants the whole site checked instead of single articles takes the Google Discover audit.

  • Publishers and local newspapers with regular editorial operations.
  • News sites with a focus on current reporting.
  • Editorial publishers and magazines with journalistic standards.

Frequently asked questions about the Google Discover check +

Does the check change anything on my website?

No. The check only reads the publicly accessible HTML of your URL, read-only. It needs no access, no plugin and changes nothing on your site.

How quickly does the Google Discover check deliver a result?

The check runs immediately after submission. You receive the report within a few minutes by email, with traffic-light result, all findings and prioritised measures.

Does the check tell me whether my article currently appears in Discover?

No. The check tests the technical requirements, not live delivery. Whether Google shows an article in Discover is controlled by Google alone and cannot be read from outside.

Can I check several articles or the whole domain?

The check assesses one article URL and adds a sample of up to three further articles from the same site. A broader analysis across many URLs is something we discuss in the initial call.

How much does the Google Discover check cost?

Nothing, the Google Discover check is free. All you need is an email address to send the report to.
